Churnkey alternatives for failed payment recovery

Last reviewed 2026-10-07

Churnkey is a retention platform, and failed payment recovery is one part of it. That shapes both the price and the answer to whether you need an alternative. This page gives the published pricing as it stood when we checked, what you get at each tier, and an honest read on where Churnkey beats everything else on this list.

What Churnkey costs

Churnkey publishes its pricing. Unusually, the price scales with your monthly churn volume rather than with your MRR or your number of customers, which means two companies the same size can pay very different amounts depending on how much churn they are processing.

PlanPriceScope
Starter$250/mo billed yearly, $300/mo billed monthlyCancel flows, payment recovery, metrics. No A/B testing or segmentation.
Core$500–$1,300/mo yearly, $600–$1,560/mo monthlyScales with churn volume up to $50k. Adds unlimited A/B testing, unlimited segmentation, customer timelines, native integrations.
Intelligence$625–$1,425/mo yearly, $750–$1,710/mo quarterlyScales with churn volume up to $50k. Adds AI adaptive offers, an AI account agent, AI translations, automatic compliance.
EnterpriseCustomFor $100k+ monthly churn volume. Adds a dedicated technical account manager, custom integrations, legal support.

Prices read from churnkey.co/pricing on 7 October 2026. Between $60k and $90k of monthly churn volume, both Core and Intelligence are quoted rather than listed. Check the page yourself before budgeting — this is the kind of thing that changes without an announcement.

Payment recovery is included in every paid tier, including Starter. You are not forced up the ladder to get dunning, which is worth saying because it is not true of every tool in this category.

What the price actually buys

Dunning is the cheap part of what Churnkey does. The expensive part is cancel flows: the screen a customer sees when they click cancel, where you offer a pause, a discount, or a plan change instead of letting them go. That is a different problem from a declined card, and it is where the A/B testing and segmentation in the upper tiers earn their keep.

If you read the tiers in that light the pricing makes more sense. Starter is a dunning tool with a cancel flow attached. Core and Intelligence are retention programmes, priced for companies where a percentage point of saved churn is worth four figures a month.

When Churnkey is the better choice

There is a clear case for it, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest.

  • Your churn is mostly voluntary. People are clicking cancel, not failing payments. No recovery tool helps with that; a cancel flow does.
  • Your churn volume is large enough that a percentage point is worth more than the subscription. At $50k of monthly churn volume, Core at $1,300 is around 2.6% of what is already walking out.
  • You want to run experiments on retention. Unlimited A/B testing and segmentation are not features you can approximate with Stripe's built-in tools.
  • You need the compliance and localisation pieces, which matter more in some jurisdictions than founders expect.

If two or more of those are true, stop reading comparison pages and book their demo. Nothing cheaper on this page replaces a cancel flow.

When it is too much tool

At $250 a month on the cheapest annual plan, Starter needs to recover more than $3,000 a year before it pays for itself. For a business doing a few thousand in MRR, that is a large share of the recoverable money going to the tool that recovers it.

The harder question is whether you have measured the problem at all. Stripe's own Smart Retries and automatic customer emails already recover a slice of failed payments at no extra charge, and they are off by default in plenty of accounts. A tool bought before those are switched on is paying for work Stripe was willing to do for free.

The alternatives, honestly

ChurnkeyFrom $250/mo billed yearlyVoluntary churn is your real problem and you want cancel flows plus dunning in one place.
Baremetrics RecoverBase plan from $75/mo plus a $129/mo add-onYou already want subscription metrics and recovery is a bolt-on to that.
A Cardnudge auditFreeYou do not yet know what failed payments cost you, and want the number before spending anything.

Cardnudge is not a Churnkey competitor and we are not going to pretend it is. It does not run cancel flows, does not retry payments and does not email anyone. It reads your Stripe account with a restricted key you create yourself and tells you what twelve months of failed payments cost, split by decline family. If that number is small, you have saved yourself a subscription. If it is large and mostly expired cards, you now know which kind of tool to buy.

Questions people ask

How much does Churnkey cost?
Their public pricing page listed Starter at $250/month billed yearly or $300/month billed monthly, Core from $500/month and Intelligence from $625/month on annual billing, both scaling with monthly churn volume up to $50k, and custom Enterprise pricing above $100k of monthly churn volume. Read on 7 October 2026.
Does Churnkey include failed payment recovery on the cheapest plan?
Yes. Payment recovery, cancel flows and metrics are listed on every paid tier including Starter. The upper tiers add A/B testing, segmentation and AI features rather than unlocking dunning.
Is there a free alternative to Churnkey?
For retries and failed-payment emails, Stripe's own revenue recovery tools are included in Stripe Billing and cost nothing extra. For measuring the problem, our audit is free. Neither replaces a cancel flow, which is the thing Churnkey does that has no free equivalent.
Why does Churnkey price on churn volume?
Because that is roughly the size of the problem they are hired to shrink. It does mean a company with high churn pays more than a similar-sized company with low churn, which is worth modelling before you commit to an annual plan.
